Hi everybody, my school is located in the Bansang Central River Region. We have three different batches of students. The class which Fatima and me are currently in is the March 2019 class, the middle most senior class.

Before you finish through the school, you have to complete eight different Modules.
  1. MODULE ONE: is an introduction module, in which we were told about how the school operates.
  2. MODULE TWO: is about Anatomy and Physiology and at the end of the module there is a test, if you pass you are promoted to the next level. If one did not pass then you have to repeat this module.
  3. MODULE THREE: is all about bedside nursing. We were taught how to take vital signs, how to give medication and how to do procedures like bed bathing, oral care, insertion of catheters, admission and discharge, and so on. Then at the end of the module students are expected to know all the nursing procedures and there is also a practical and objective and theory test, which all students are expected to pass. Again, if you fail, repeat and if you pass, you are promoted to module four.
  4. MODULE FOUR: this is about medical and surgical problems and is one among the hectic and difficult modules in the school. It is composed of one month classes and four months practical training.
  5. MODULE FIVE AND SIX: is about obstetrics and gynaecology. It is composed of one month class, six months practical training and one month mid-block. If a student passes this module then you can be called a nurse! 😊
  6. MODULE SEVEN: is about community practice, this is the module that we are currently in. It is composed of two weeks of classes and five weeks in the community. We are posted at different regions, I am currently at a village called Yerobowol in Upper River Region URR of The Gambia.

Here we went into the communities to find out what the problems are of that community, using questionnaires to make a diagnosis. We are eight in a group, we work as a team. Right now we already evaluate the problems of that community then we came to find out that malaria was the leading cause of health problems in this region. So we had a gathering with the people of the community. We gave them bed nets and also made them aware of the importance of hygiene, we did a cleansing exercise with them too.

  1. MODULE EIGHT: is called the management module. We will be taught on how to manage a facility if we are posted. After this last module, which we will start in January 2022, we will do our final year exams and we are done.

Fatima – Huidige bezigheden

We are in our community module and this module requires going to the community and conduct community research that will lead you to your community diagnosis. With that you can know the problems disturbing the community. If we can solve it, we intervene. If we can't, we extend it to the ministry.

This work is a group work and we conducted our research in a village of 25 compounds with a population of 538. We used questionnaires to ask each compound questions like: their age, how many houses in the compound, beds with or without bed nets, whether they are involved in petite or large business, whether their children are attending nursery school, primary school, secondary, tertiary or Arabic school. We ask about their source of income, their source of drinking water and we observed their environment for cleanliness and also ask about the diseases that most disturb them. Regarding the last they came up with malaria 🦟 as the most disturbing, followed by respiratory tract disorders en then diarrhea.

So after all that we analyse our findings en solve the problems that we can solve like giving them bed nets en we conducted cleansing exercise 🧹 for the entire community en we also give them health talk. The other issue like not having learning institution in their community, we can't do much about it as students. So, when we go back to our school we will do a presentation about our community research and they will see the problems we found there and it will be extended to the regional health directorate (RHD) then to the ministry for solutions.

We also wrote a book about the community research. We are done with the typing but are still editing the work.

We had 1 month here, so Thursday we will be going back to Bansang, then Friday we travel to kombo (to our various homes) to go en vote because our election is Saturday.
